Fat burners are one of the most purchased and most overhyped product categories in sports nutrition. Some ingredients have legitimate science. Most don't. Here's the unfiltered breakdown.

Ingredients That Actually Work

Caffeine (100–400 mg/day), synephrine from bitter orange, and green tea EGCG have the most consistent evidence for increasing thermogenesis and fat oxidation. Yohimbine shows real promise for stubborn fat areas, particularly in a fasted state. These are the only ingredients worth paying for.

Ingredients With Weak Evidence

L-carnitine, CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), and raspberry ketones are widely marketed but show minimal effects in well-controlled human trials. L-carnitine may have modest benefits for specific populations (elderly, vegetarians). The others are mostly hype at normal doses.

Complete Waste of Money

Garcinia cambogia, hoodia, white kidney bean extract, and the majority of 'proprietary blends' with undisclosed dosing fall into this category. Proprietary blends are often a red flag — they hide the fact that active ingredients are dosed too low to have any effect.

The Thermogenic Reality

Even the best fat burner ingredients only increase calorie burn by 50–100 calories per day above baseline. At most. That's one small cookie. The math simply doesn't support fat burners as a meaningful intervention when diet isn't dialed in.

Safety Concerns

High-stimulant fat burners carry real cardiovascular risks — elevated heart rate, blood pressure, and in rare cases, serious cardiac events. Many products have been recalled by the FDA. If you're going to use a thermogenic, stick to well-dosed, transparent formulas from reputable brands.

Save your money on the fancy blends. A quality caffeine supplement, green tea extract, and a caloric deficit will outperform any overpriced fat burner on the shelf. The fundamentals remain the fundamentals.
